Most of them are classified as Polish writers from the Kresy Wschodnie (Eastern Borderlands), the outskirts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Second Polish Republic. Yet to date only a small number of authors have been incorporated into the Belarusian literary canon. In this presentation, Hanna Yankuta attempted to reinterpret the works of émigré writers from Eastern Belarus in relation to the region’s multilingual legacy. Read more

One concept in the book proved to be especially compelling for this first cohort of readers: the idea of ketman, or ideological disguise. In this talk, Jacob Mikanowski told the story of ketman’s rise and fall in order to identify an overlooked current in mid-century thought, and as a way to reflect on the current terms of our relationship to ideology and power.
