In this talk, Stanley argued that the history of the United States, as well as its present situation, justifies these concerns. More specifically, Stanley argued that the anti-democratic form that is emerging in the United States is a kind of racial fascism. Europe should prepare for the possibility of a fascist United States. Read more

The Institute for Human Sciences, in cooperation with the Polish Academy of Sciences (and generously supported by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science), has established a mentoring initiative for applicants for European Research Council Starting and Consolidator Grants in the humanities and social sciences from Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen and further internationalize the humanities and social sciences in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe by increasing their inclusion in ERC funding schemes. Most of the borders in Europe and throughout the world were opened to Ukrainians - in contrast to the restrictive border regimes many recent refugee movements to Europe, such as the Syrian or Afghani refugees fleeing war, were subject to. A series of schemes were developed to welcome Ukrainian refugees and emplace them into the labor markets and educational systems of their host countries. Instead of approaching the current Ukrainian refugee movement as unique and singular, this panel aimed to situate its dynamics within a broader context of refugee movements in Europe and beyond. It further placed it in conversation with the historical, political, and social contexts that cause such movements in the first place and seeks to explore it in relation to and together with other refugee movements globally. Lesia Ukrainka is a canonical figure in Ukraine, known for her fiery poems opposing Russian colonial rule in Ukraine and praising freedom. Her most accomplished works were her dramas, however, which transform stories and myths drawn from European and world culture into feminist and anti-imperial allegories: these with their focus on imperial violence, the importance of freedom and the twisting of truth, have much to teach us today.
