Virginia Dignum

The objective of this project is to develop a novel conceptualization of AI using arguments from relational and feminist epistemology in order to challenge the traditional rational and individualistic tenets of AI. Such a conceptualization will enable us to address the transformative role of AI in society, questioning how AI is used, who uses and benefits from it, what knowledge it uses, how it relates to power structures, and how AI can be used as a positive force for change and inclusion. The current narrative of AI as rational and problem-solving enforces and continues current power imbalances and supports the idea that AI is impartial and free of bias. To account for societal impact, we need to reconsider this conceptualization and to rethink responsibility and power. Virginia Dignum’s proposal will lead to AI systems that are human-centered, aligned with societal needs and that enforce inclusion and wide participation.
