He will focus on enthusiastic building, social deeds, vernacular creativity, and various stages of pre-solidarity in Poland since late socialism. He will discuss the flipside of late socialist modernization in Poland, and its trajectory after 1989, considered as both intimate, unrecognized dimensions of bottom-up statehood practices, and processes of acquiring a kind of latent, almost invisible social and political subjectivity. An experimental, historical-ethnographic methodology may unearth elements of Polish social history kept secret for decades. The study is conducted in the context of the “people’s history”, yet more precise, and based on specially elaborated methodology. Read more

Various social, political and economic developments of the last two decades – from 9/11 terrorist attacks to the 2008 financial crisis to the recent populist uprisings on both sides of the Atlantic – blatantly contradict that over-optimist conviction. A lot has been said about what the populists get wrong, what is, however, more puzzling is that they seem to get some things right – as if people had a sort of political blindsight or – to put it in more philosophical terms – as if there was some kind of basic social and political unconcealedness/disclosure (alētheia) where the truth shines through the curtain of lies. Among the most important features of that concept was the use of new media and scenography in order to create continuity of a historical narrative. Storytelling is connected with an extensive use of electronically processed iconography and media to construct powerful simulacra appealing both to minds and emotions of visitors. That makes a history museum a powerful instrument of interpreting history and influencing audiences. Therefore, museum professionals are situated between the fields that are ascribed to history as a science and memory as a social and political phenomenon. In his talk, Robert Kostro would like to speak about intellectual and practical challenges that are connected with creating the narrative of the exhibitions in Polish History Museum. He will also place the practice of the historical museology of today in the context of different approaches to storytelling in the past. Read more

	Limits and Divisions of Human Histories	Tue, 07.12.2021	Lecture	Andrzej Nowak Katherine Younger Ludger Hagedorn	Limits and Divisions of Human Histories Tue, 07.12.2021 Speakers: Andrzej Nowak Katherine Younger Ludger Hagedorn Series: Lecture The theory of history, as presented by Reinhart Koselleck (1923-2006), offers an intellectually tempting structure of three anthropological distinctions that prescribe figures of all possible histories (individual and collective): sooner or later, inside and outside, above and below. The first one signifies the span between being born and having to die, which makes every life unique and at the same time part of a particular generational experience. It could also be rendered as “old” and “new”. Uses of the second pair might be analysed as a contrast between public and private, or as a contemporary fear stemming from the contrast between “home” and “intruders”. The third pair Andrzej Nowak will try to “translate” not just in “master” and “slave” categories, but rather as “pupil” and “teacher”, or even “therapist” and “patient”. Nowak will try to read Koselleck’s structure in a perspective offered by spatial/temporal concepts of contemporary “Europe in progress” (or “Europe in crisis”), as well as in another, non-political perspective of esthetic renditions of the three above mentioned Koselleck’s abstract pairs ¬ in Andrzej Wajda’s “Birchwood” movie, the last scene of Richard Strauss’s “Rosenkavalier”, and in Philip Larkin’s poem: “An Arundel Tomb”. The question is whether love can be included into these conflicting pairs as a possible factor transcending their structures? Read more

What kind of memory work needs to be done to overcome imposed forgetting? This presentation aimed to address these questions by analyzing the long-term legacy of political violence that travels across time and space. By unravelling the meaning of Holodomor, one of the biggest - yet unacknowledged - atrocities in the history of the Soviet Union, it traced the lasting effects of the denial of mass atrocity and documented the struggles of transnational mnemonic activists to reclaim authority over a silenced past. It further showed that to achieve reconciliation with a repressive past, history and memory need to be seen as mutually dependent transcending the national optic. Read more
