East West Street explores the origins of ‘genocide’ and ‘crimes against humanity’ and the path to justice. The Ratline, the book’s sequel, is to be published in April 2020. The performance focuses on the lives and ideas of three individuals from the trials: academic Hersch Lauterpacht, prosecutor Raphael Lemkin and Hitler’s lawyer Hans Frank, and the music that connected men on opposite sides of the courtroom. 	Cossacks and Enlightenment	Mon, 05.10.2020	Seminars and Colloquia	Volodymyr Sklokin		Cossacks and Enlightenment Mon, 05.10.2020 Speakers: Volodymyr Sklokin Series: Seminars and Colloquia The talk dealt with the impact of Enlightenment ideas on rethinking the image of Cossacks in the Ukrainian peripheries of the Russian Empire in the second half of the eighteenth century. The mechanisms through which eighteenth century West European Enlightenment political and historical thought provided intellectual resources for both orientalizing the Cossack political tradition and empowering it were examined. Orientalist discourse was introduced by Voltaire, used by Saint Petersburg enlightened absolutists to justify the elimination of Cossack autonomies, and accepted by a segment of the local elite. On the other hand, Enlightenment political thought, exemplified in particular by Rousseau and Montesquieu, was used to go beyond traditional estate and regional particularism, to rethink the Cossack political tradition in more universalist categories of republicanism and to set it against Catherine II’s supposed ‘despotism’. The final years of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the first years of independent Ukraine came together into what was essentially an uninterrupted festival of artistic events that were new for their time, or at the very least a clear alternative to the ossified official culture. A radical renewal of cultural discourses and values through poetry, rock music, visual and performance art became an ineluctable part of sociopolitical changes at that break of eras. How did it begin in Ukraine, and why did it end? What has been preserved in memory? What has been swallowed up by oblivion? Was the “festival age” a continuation of, or a supplement to, the East European velvet alternatives? Read more

In October 1986 he was part of the U.S. team at the Reagan-Gorbachev meeting in Reykjavik: he was in fact the U.S. notetaker on the Sunday afternoon when that meeting broke up. Many now see that afternoon’s exchange on getting rid of nuclear weapons as validating today’s elimination movement. Simons’ memory of being there gives him a somewhat different take, and he talked about it, and what came before and after Reykjavik, in his session. Read more

	Religion and Power Between Empires and Publics	Mon, 04.05.2020	Seminars and Colloquia	Katherine Younger Laura Engelstein		Religion and Power Between Empires and Publics Mon, 04.05.2020 Speakers: Katherine Younger Laura Engelstein Series: Seminars and Colloquia In the 19th century, the Greek Catholic/Uniate Church, an Eastern rite Catholic Church on the territory of modern-day Ukraine, Belarus, and Poland, served as a proving ground for evolving approaches to negotiating religion within states and between them. Straddling a political border between the Habsburg and Russian empires and a confessional boundary between Catholicism and Orthodoxy, the church became a major object of the ambitions and anxieties of empires and their subjects. The project explores two main questions: How did the role of religion change over the course of the 19th century with regards to imperial governance and international politics? And how did these changes shape the ways power was exercised in those same two arenas? The case of the Greek Catholic/Uniate Church helps us to trace confession’s evolution as a crucial element in the logic of empire, as well as how policies of coercion came to be complemented by tools of attraction given the growing range of actors with domestic and international political influence and power.
