This research project aims at explaining the trajectory of the miners' movement in the Donbas during the years 1989 to 1993 that initially supported Ukrainian sovereignty and then embraced the idea of "regional independence." Kyrylo Tkachenko explains this shift by reconstructing the region's "economic imaginary." By this he means a product of previous institutional developments and administrative practices, which was actualized in a specific way in the context of perestroika.
