Fashion Among the Ruins:
The Politics of Distraction in Post-War Berlin

This book explores the discourses and practices of fashion in Berlin (1945-49). By examining films, fashion photographs, and media accounts of the first fashion shows, I recreate an intermedial account of post-war politics and aesthetics situated between the burden of the past and the aspirations for the future. Of particular interest are the experiences of women and their presence in the mass media. As it focuses on the revived fashion discourse in Berlin, the book unveils the idiosyncrasies resulting from the coexistence of necessity and distraction, ruins and entertainment, control and freedom.
