The Selection of Works includes five theoretical works—Discourse in the Novel, Forms of Time and Chronotope in the Novel, The Novel as a Literary Genre, From the Prehistory of Novelistic Discourse, The Bildungsroman and Its Significance in the History of Realism— which were written during the 1930s by Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin (1895-1975). A Russian philosopher, literary critic, semiotician and scholar who worked on literary theory, ethics and the philosophy of language, Bakhtin is considered as one of the most important figures of the Soviet period and one of the leading thinkers of the twentieth century.
