Locally-Conditioned Effectiveness of the European Union as the Normative Power in its Eastern Neighbourhood

In my research, I study the effectiveness of the EU’s normative power in the Eastern neighbourhood of the EU.  Specifically, I analyze the processes involved in the adoption of fundamental democratic reforms promoted by the EU in Ukraine, focusing on the domestic factors that shaped its response to pro-democratic pressures. My thesis is set within a wider theoretical framework studying the normative power of  the EU from a perspective of power as relational, thus challenging the notion of the EU as a normative power and instead emphasizing the agency of the ‘power-recipient’ in the realization of democratic norms.
