Trauma Representation in Vernacular Photography
At the IWM I will continue my ongoing research on conflicts, focusing on the visual representation of traumatic historical events through vernacular photography. I focus not on amateur photographs that depict violent events directly, but rather on “normal” images taken at the time of those events. I am interested in analyzing the subtle presence of historical troubles in seemingly peaceful archive images, such as family and group photos or scenes of everyday life. This particular stage of my research involves materials from Finnish private photo archives from the Winter War era and Polish post-war vernacular photography related to territorial losses in the East.
