Stability in Crisis: Debt, Finance, and the Re-Regulation of the EMU (2008–2014)

Why did the main institutional actors fail to articulate convincing policy alternatives to the entrenched pre-2008 consensus in the EMU about fiscal and financial stability during the Euro crisis between 2010 and 2014? Drawing on archival and interview data with key figures at the European Commission, the European Council, and the ECB, my project will explore the structural tensions arising from concerted EU-level efforts to design effective short-term crisis-resolution strategies and legal frameworks aimed at crisis prevention in the long run in this period marked by a potentially counterproductive sequencing of emergency reforms.
