How have the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany remembered or failed to remember Franz Kafka? What does this mean for Kafka’s identity today, especially in a time of resurgent nationalism? How far is an artist’s national identity important when it comes to their being claimed by a country in which they lived? How far is the importance of their national identity influenced by the pressures of profit-oriented heritage industries?
