From Character to Identity.
A History of Transylvanian Belonging through Physical Education and Sports since 1919
In my research, I investigate the momentous shift from the politics of ‘character’ to the politics of ‘identity’ through an analysis of physical education and sports in modern Transylvania. My project follows the local intellectual adaptation and elaboration of the notions that make up the modern sporting movement, their inculcation and implementation, as well as their effects in grounding and disseminating notions of belonging in the conflicting political conjunctures that have marked this region throughout the 20th century.
