Gender Equality in Times of Closure and Backsliding
Opposition to gender equality is increasing: we see a widening and increasingly assertive pushback, particularly in developing and post-communist countries, over the past decade. There is a striking lack of research into the gendered aspects and implications of the rollback of democracy and closure of civic space. This research project undertakes a rigorous gender analysis to explore and reveal the consequences of these alarming processes for women’s rights and inclusion. The project particularly focuses on the closure of two spaces identified in the literature as vital to the progress of women’s rights: civil society and international politics.
