The Political and Social Aspects of ‘Culture Wars’ in Russia

The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is now an active participant in social and political life in Russia, taking conservative stands on public morality, contemporary art, education, science and family issues. The urban educated population has reacted negatively to this. Meanwhile, the ROC’s position is shared by the state, which declares itself a defender of traditional spiritual values rooted in the past. Thus in the ‘culture wars’ between Russian religious conservatives and secularists, the former are strongly supported by the state and the latter accuse it of violating the constitutional principle of separation of church and state.
