This project explores emerging social movements in Komsomolsk-na-Amure, the largest military-industrial base in the Russian Far East. It follows several local initiatives, including the demonstrations staged by the socialist People’s Power movement and the 2020 protests against the arrest of the governor of Khabarovsk Region Sergei Furgal. The central aim of this research project is to uncover how the socialist values of the Soviet period intertwine with the informal ethics of the Gulag’s criminal subculture in shaping the regional identities and political imaginaries of Komsomolsk residents.
