In the last decade various East European democracies were afflicted by symptoms of democratic deterioration. The main objective of my project will be to provide an analytical interpretation of this backsliding: its timing, the reframing of the parameters of democratic governance that made it possible, and the forms of hybridity—the mixing of democratic and illiberal practices—to which it gives rise.
