This project raises the question of how the category of gender and Western feminist theoretical approaches can be used to examine the socialist architectural environment and its inequalities. Through a narrative analysis of interviews with women architects, Petra Hlaváčková examines the specifics of their emancipatory strategies and "wounding identities.'' Hlaváčková is especially interested in the Czechoslovak context of state gender politics and related debates, such as the debate in Literární noviny (1967) following the publication of Jan Patočka`s anthology of Simone de Beauvoir`s Second Sex, in which he himself participated.

The project will compare gendered reality in Czechoslovakia and Austria through interviews with women who emigrated to Austria in the 1960s and 1970s about their personal experience. Findings will be presented in the form of a radio documentary.
