It is often said that representative democracies are currently in crisis. It is impossible to overlook such symptoms as the decline of voter turnout, the rise of neo-populism, and the rise of media monopolies. It also seems that the post-communist democracies of Eastern Europe are particularly ill-prepared to cope with these challenges. This makes a Czech translation of Urbinati’s compelling defence of representative democracy, Democracy Disfigured, both timely and indispensable.
