Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s first major work, Phénoménologie de la perception, published in 1945, has since become a classic in European philosophy. Merleau-Ponty attributes a fundamental role to perception in lived experience in general. His analyses focus on the way the embodied subject (as opposed to the objective body) finds itself in a world shared with others, showing the primacy of a pre-reflexive, tacit and, in this sense, anti-Cartesian cogito.
