Hemingway and Sartre believe in the ongoing becoming of man, in the ability of man to escape from nothingness. They consider concrete human existence in their works. Sartre reactivated the notion that Hemingway described in Death in the Afternoon—“querencia”––and applied it to his philosophy. Sartre's 'querencia' refers to man's search for a specific locality of Being, where he can become more effective and successful in his battle against nothingness. It is where a man can be conscious of his existence and find freedom within it.
