Walter Hallstein was one of the founding fathers of the unification of post-war Europe, yet his legacy almost seems to have been cut out of European integration history and is certainly understudied in current scholarship. My project aims to rediscover Hallstein from a new, pro-integration perspective with a view to reviving debates on integration theories. I argue that he played an extraordinary role in the construction of European institutions and that his theoretical views still have explanatory power.
