Central Europe on the Way to Democracy
The theme for our panel discussion is Which Europe? Some answers are very easy, obviously, a unified, peaceful Europe based on the rule of law, common democratic principle, unified economic rules based on the extension of market economy. I do think that we can easily agree from the beginning that geographically speaking, this Europe should be the Europe from San Francisco or Vancouver, to Vladivostok. That mean, Helsinki is Europe, not the geographical Europe. But these type of answers are right but not enough. We do need to be more specific taking into account in any case, this Europe, the Europe of the future, the Europe which is in front of us. If we are capable to cope with the new situation, which the revolution of 1989 has given us, it will be the result of a process, or better of many different processes, which are taking place and will take place in the near future in our continent.
