Following Alasdair MacIntyre and Charles Taylor, Anglo-American philosophy has been interested in the relation between narrative and the self. My research looks at the way the narrative mediates our self-experience and self-understanding. I try to bring recent approaches together with those in hermeneutic phenomenology, especially Heidegger’s thought. I argue that our selves are neither simply given in introspection nor experienced as objects alongside others, but primarily presented to us amid projected narrative patterns of meaning.
