My research explores the variety of protest in authoritarian settings and authoritarian regimes’ vulnerability to contestation from below. Combining interviewing and archival research, I examine different forms of protest from the point of view of the state (Czechoslovakia) and the society (Tunisia). While each case employs a different perspective, both exemplify the subversive potential of micro-practices of resistance as well as the various mechanisms of protest spread and transformation identified theoretically. Drawing on insights from political science and sociology, I seek to present a more dynamic view of both political regimes and protest.
