Of Slovakia's half million Roma, one quarter live in ghettoes lacking safe drinking water and basic sanitation. In the summer of 2003, I spent four months living with families in four different Roma communities both urban and rural, documenting daily life in the isolated settlements of Slovakia. I intend to return to continue my documentation with an interest in some of the changes since Slovakia joined the European Union.

Between 2005 and 2009 the Institute for Human Sciences at Boston University also awards Milena Jesenská Fellowships to US journalists for research stays of up to three months at the IWM in Vienna.
