My project is a book manuscript titled “Liberal Sympathies: Justice, Upward Mobility, and Adam Smith’s Moral Sentiments.” I argue for a liberalism built on the work of Adam Smith, an alternative to Kantian liberalism. It is a liberalism predicated on a holistic interaction between reason and emotion; inquiry and imagination; empathy and otherness; science and belief; discovery and education; economics and non-ideal theory; and the capabilities approach.
