The ambition of a united Europe has for a long while found material expression in the various plans for a European transportation infrastructure. Historically, in most European states, centralized national railways have been connected to strong ideas of statehood and national sovereignty. Following the integration of Spain into the European Community a new vision of European connectedness began to develop. My project explores the way in which the project of the Spanish high speed rail is situated at the intersection of European and national narratives of progress and decline.
