The Silent Archives project is a podcast series of documentary stories based on the intimate forms in which Ukrainians record their experiences of war. This is history’s most documented war to date, but are we preserving what is truly important? The project explores how the media of memory have changed and considers what today could become Ukraine’s future archives: a writer’s notes from the front; voice messages from a couple separated by the war; an underground book club on Telegram during the occupation; a soldier’s diary on Twitter—these are “silent archives” that may disappear. We believe in the power of personal stories: World War II left behind tons of documents, but it was The Diary of Anne Frank that shook the world. This project ensures that the voices of the authors of new diaries like this—those who do not have the resources to speak publicly, but whose stories are fundamental to understanding the experience of war—are not lost.
