Bogdal’s book presents a new perspective on the Roma population in Europe that addresses the ambivalent attitudes towards them ranging from fascination to scorn. Even more important is the fact that this question is discussed within the framework of nation states and their specific, but changing styles of political rhetoric. This is of particular relevance for Hungary, where in recent years the Roma, as the most populous and most visible minority, have become the targets of political attack.
