As Lithuania is currently struggling not only to introduce gender studies into university curricula but also to overcome the belief that sex and gender are stable and unchanging categories, translations of the foundational texts of feminist theory are urgently needed. A translation of Judith Butler’s seminal work will introduce basic concepts, such as gender identity and expression, into Lithuanian public discourse, without which a meaningful cultural dialogue about human rights is hardly possible.
