Ellen Meiksins Wood’s influential Liberty and Property is the practical illustration of a revolutionary method in the history of political ideas. It combines a contextualist concern for the pragmatics of classical texts with a materialist definition of their relevant social contexts. It questions the nature of and relations between democracy, capitalism and liberalism, and defines the nature of state power in a radically new way.
