In this latest episode in the second season of our Democracy in Question? podcast, Shalini Randeria is in conversation with Timothy Garton Ash, asking: Does liberalism need reinvention in the 21st century?

The decline and even death of liberalism has been predicted often. Today it faces challenges not only from populism in Europe and the US but also from China offering an illiberal alternative that may prove attractive to leaders in the global South. In this episode, Timothy Garton Ash and Shalini Randeria discuss what liberalism can learn from its mistakes to emerge stronger.

Timothy Garton Ash is the author of ten books of political writing or ‘history of the present’ which have charted the transformation of Europe over the last half century. He is Professor of European Studies in the University of Oxford, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.
