I will investigate 13th- and 14th-century conflicts around Europe as a political body, and how attempts to build the identity of Europe as an ecclesiastical mystical body end in failure. The more brutally the Church tried to deal with its enemies, the more quickly it decayed. My research will focus primarily on visual sources from the works of Opicinus de Canistris, whose visions I believe can be inspiring in the ongoing debate about European identity, borders and migration. One can productively read his maps using the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari.
