Philosophy and rhetoric have defined each other for most of the history of the disciplines since Plato’s Gorgias. I propose that the dialogue Gorgias represents the turning point of Plato’s thought, and that his proper interpretation makes it possible to reassess the traditional definition of philosophy and rhetoric. Reinterpreting these Platonic roots makes it possible to both build and give a new perspective on the philosophical and rhetorical traditions.
