"Collective Amnesia" made it possible for Koleka Putuma to spend the last three years traveling, performing poetry and producing theater outside of South Africa. In those three years, she observed a shift / difference in performance and making work when she was at home versus when she was abroad; this experience led her to start interrogating those shifts. It wasn’t until this year, when a global pandemic forced everyone to pause, that she began to sit with those observations and questions more deeply. In writing this second book, she is beginning to make sense of these three years and herself as a performer and maker who was also grappling with the complexities of visibility, invisibility, and the stuff in between.
