At their core, welfare systems are meant to protect individuals from market vulnerabilities and economic shocks. In my research, I look at how characteristics of government, such as coalition size and coherence, parliamentary majority and quality of parties, interact with institutions in order to retrench or expand access to healthcare in the southern and eastern members of the EU. Understanding when and how governments impact on healthcare systems can help prepare civil actors to cope with possible repercussions, especially in terms of health inequalities and economic vulnerabilities affecting individuals.
