Every country has a unique system of territorial structure, within which small and middle-sized towns play an important regional role in the general stability of spatial development. One of the main problems of urban history in Russia is a lacking theoretical understanding of the small town phenomenon. My project is aimed at a comparative analysis of methodological concepts of historical urban development in Europe. It implies comparing these theories and applying them to the Russian and Siberian model of urbanization and attempts to elaborate a new approach for the study of historical urban development in Siberia.
