Elections were once deemed democracy’s essential attribute. Yet, the disenchantment of citizens with this institution seems to be on the rise recently. The project seeks to critically assess and supplement an understanding of elections as non-violent conflict resolution. It suggests that in an age when scholarly and public debates are permeated with talks of polarization and culture wars, we cannot think of democracy and its institutions only in terms of plurality and conflict. To maintain the democratic potential of elections vis-à-vis newly emerging challenges, we should embrace uncertainty as the bottom line of our societies.
