Advanced industrial democracies are undergoing two major transformations: One concerns the pattern of political representation; the other concerns the capacity for economic adjustment. The change in representation centers on political parties. The late Peter Mair referred to this as ‘ruling the void’. The change in state capacity is connected to both formal and informal patterns of economic integration. My project is to explore whether and how these two transformations are related.
