Europe is often blamed for being unable to sustain innovation and thus being marginalized in the global industrial and political landscape. Innovation, however, is not neutral: it can be good or bad. There is a need to foster “good” innovation based on the principles of Digital Humanism, innovation that can support a better life for humans and lead to a more just and equitable society. Carlo Ghezzi’s research will focus on what universities can do in this context, arguing that as homes of multi-disciplinary knowledge and critical thinking they should play a crucial role in nurturing good innovation. They provide the rich and creative ecosystem in which multiple disciplines can work together on research to refound principles and methods for the design, validation, and evolution of good digital innovations and compliant business models. Universities should also rethink their educational approaches for future innovators and experiment with new methods by mixing students with multidisciplinary backgrounds in project-oriented studios.
