My research explores the shift of the Romanian socialist regime towards nationalism and the ideology of ‘socialism in one country’ between 1962 and 1990. I intend to study the process of building a national economy and the nationalist turn in the Romanian Communist Party on three interconnected levels: first, Romania’s semi-fluid alliances, oppositions, and vulnerabilities within the world system; second, the re-emergence of ‘the nation’ and ‘the people’ as categories of rule within the specific matrix of relationships between territory, the state, and the economy; third, the reframing of class formation processes as nation building.
