Military Volunteers in the Defense of Chernihiv (February-March 2022)

The first days of the full-scale war were a nationwide social and psychological “experiment” on a grand scale. This is particularly true for cities like Chernihiv, where the war arrived on the very first day. Without any time for reflection, citizens were guided by mental models of behavior that had been embedded in them throughout their previous lives.

The aim of this project is to document the period of the city’s defense, with a special focus on the moods, motivations, and behavior of military volunteers who joined the Ukrainian army during the first days of the war and immediately found themselves in fierce battles.

The result of the project should be a documentary essay (book) based on Serhiy Lepyavko’s personal memoir From a Professor to a Soldier, his family’s experience, and the personal reflections of his brothers-in-arms, including those from the Chernihiv intelligentsia.
