Documenting Ukraine: A Series of Reportages Documenting Destroyed Science Facilities in Ukraine for Kunsht Magazine

Russian aggression has had a hugely detrimental effect on Ukrainian science. Among the facilities that have been damaged are the security service archives in Chernihiv, the Institute for Radio Physics and Electronics, the National Gene Bank of Plants in Kharkiv, the Institute for Superhard Materials in Kyiv, and many more. Many Ukrainian scientists were forced to flee the country and either pause their research or transfer it abroad. Ukrainian museum and archive workers had to hastily preserve their collections from possible shellings. There has been little coverage of the damage done to these scientific institutions, and our project aims to rectify that. We will create a series of five reportages on the destruction of science facilities in Ukraine, including photos and stories of the researchers and workers at the facilities. The reportages will be in Ukrainian and English to attract attention, possible help and collaboration from international partners.

Healing During War: Stories of Ukrainian Resolve

Healing during War: Stories of Ukrainian Resolve is a series of reportages, featuring multimedia storytelling including professional photography, text, audio, and video, on the adaptability of Ukrainian medicine during the Russian full-scale invasion. They highlight the innovative medical advancements that are instrumental in saving lives amid the war.

The project will encompass four materials, each focused on a different Ukrainian medical institution grappling with the impacts of Russia's invasion.

Since our expertise is in writing about science in a popular way, each reportage will feature human stories and touch on scientific aspects of each topic, making the features stand out from the previous media coverage.

The reportages will be disseminated on the Kunsht website, and feature on our podcasts, as well as through video snippets on TikTok and Instagram, having an outreach of at least 100,000 people. We also plan to translate the reportages into English and publish them on the Science at Risk platform for an international audience. (https://scienceatrisk.org). We plan to promote the materials through social media, as well as in the form of photo exhibitions.
