Silent Witness

Silent Witness is an ongoing artistic research project that explores architecture as a silent witness to war, memory, and transformation. Through painting, drawing, and field documentation, Karina Synytsia studies how buildings and everyday structures preserve emotional and historical traces of human presence and loss. The project focuses on fragments of architecture—facades, reliefs, and ruins—that have endured or changed through destruction. Synytsia treats these forms as vessels of memory, using painting as a language of preservation that captures both the visible and invisible marks left by time. Developed within Ukraine, Silent Witness continues Synytsia’s long-term work with post-war landscapes and spaces of survival, aiming to build a visual and emotional archive of resilience, care, and remembrance.
