Tales of War

Tales of War is an ongoing art project documenting how the war transforms everyday life, identity, and emotional reality. Through painting, Dzvinya Podlyashetska explores both visible destruction and invisible wounds—fear, hope, longing, and the feeling of living between two worlds. Since 2022, she has created a series of paintings and works on paper that reflect the personal and collective experiences of Ukrainians during wartime.

In Podlyashetska’s works, scenes of explosions, ruined cities, and displacement blend with elements of Ukrainian folklore and myth. Angels, beasts, and symbolic patterns appear as metaphors for trauma, resilience, and cultural memory. Her style is vivid, naïve, sometimes grotesque, using bright colors to capture both chaos and endurance.

With the support of Documenting Ukraine, Podlyashetska will continue expanding this series, addressing themes of emigration, psychological impact, and intimate moments of humanity that persist despite war. Her aim is to preserve not only facts, but emotional truth.
