The project is a multimedia installation that explores the boundaries between war and everyday life, the external and internal, and public and private space through the symbolism of the threshold and purification. This installation is based on video footage shot by Pavlo Kovach during his service in evacuating the fallen and liberated territories of the Donetsk region. These frames, which capture everyday moments in extraordinary circumstances—washing blood and mud off the evacuation vehicle, folding military uniforms for burial, cooking food—are projected onto a “screen” formed of doormats, which are usually placed in front of the entrance to a house. Bearing the inscription “Welcome” and various designs, the mats, with which the artist Danylo Kovach has been working in recent years, become a symbolic material that embodies the themes of emigration, hospitality, and the act of purification before entering the space of the house.
