“The Voice of Modernity”: The Experience of Displaced People and the Volunteer Movement in the Frontline City of Dnipro

With the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, millions of people were forced to leave their homes. Moving westward became a symbol of hope for salvation from death and destructive enemy weapons. Millions of refugees went abroad, while others were dispersed all over Ukraine, seeking some shelter in big cities and small villages.
Dnipro is one of the cities that became a frontline outpost. Today, it hosts tens of thousands of refugees who are forced to adjust their lives to a new reality. The city would never have been able to cope with so many displaced people if there had not been a surge in the volunteer movement. Hundreds of people, individually and in groups, started to help displaced people and soldiers at the front.
About 50 interviews are planned to be recorded. The students of the History Faculty of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University will be involved in the implementation of the project. Preservation of the collection of audio recordings is also planned using funds of the Dnipropetrovsk National Museum named after D. I. Yavornytskyi, so that local researchers would also be able to use these materials in their work. The aim of the project is to document the experiences of displaced persons and participants of the volunteer movement.
