Preserving Embroidered Heritage in War-Affected Villages Facing Disappearance in the Northern Chernihiv Region

This project aims to document and safeguard traditional embroidery from war-affected villages of the Semenivka district in the north of Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. Ongoing military destruction and displacement place this understudied regional textile heritage at high risk of irreversible loss.

Through field research, Yaroslava Shkurat will locate surviving embroidered garments, conduct interviews with local residents, and record techniques, motifs, and village-specific stylistic features. The collected data will be systematically classified into a digital research archive, while selected physical objects will be transferred to museum institutions for preservation and scholarly use. The project contributes to the documentation of cultural heritage endangered by war.
