Lullabies in Times of War in Ukraine

Singing a lullaby is a very intimate practice that rarely reaches the public ear in its original form. However, this is when lullabies are most interesting. How the melody and lyrics are adapted, as well as the choice of motives and meanings passed through a song, invite us to understand the deepest values of a family, an ethnic group, a nation. In times of war, lullabies become a source of resilience and mental well-being. They explain violence, soothe pain and build foundations for peace (John Paul Lederach, 2005).

Finally, publicly available lullabies can become a uniting glue, a conversation starter, a healing experience. Thus, the aim of the project is to record an album of contemporary sung lullabies, accompanied by a sociological commentary that explores the social function of lullabies in times of war.
